Culturally Inclusive Nutrition Recommendations: The Role of the Nutrition Professional

Presented by: Nada Mays, MS, RDN

As nutrition professionals, we know how important food is to life, but how do we respond to patients who show us foods and cultural practices that we are unfamiliar with? Our response in these situations significantly impacts patients’ morale in pursuing nutrition counseling and achieving their health goals. Join Nada Mays, registered dietitian and professionally trained chef, in this presentation on culturally inclusive nutrition recommendations and our role as nutrition professionals. This session will provide skills to navigate unfamiliar foods and cultural practices through a partnership with your patients. Tools will be provided to strengthen the safe space within nutrition counseling sessions. Case studies will be shared to depict real-world situations and application of these skills and tools.

At the end of the session participants will:

  1. Define and comprehend the value and impact of cultural humility in nutrition counseling.
  2. Understand the nutritional value of unfamiliar cultural dishes through a culinary perspective.
  3. Utilize motivational interviewing to develop culturally appropriate goals and recommendations.
