June means summer is right around the corner, but it also means it’s time to celebrate National Dairy Month.
National Dairy Month began as National Milk Month in 1937 to help promote milk and all its benefits among consumers. Today, National Dairy Month has evolved into a celebration of all things dairy – milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, and more – as well as a way to highlight dairy farmers’ hard work to produce the foods we love.
Celebrate Dairy
At New England Dairy, we love to take any opportunity to celebrate dairy and the farmers that produce it. From visiting a farm stand to sharing your favorite dairy-filled meal with friends and family, there are a number of ways to highlight dairy throughout the month of June.
Visit Farm Stands
Many dairy farms throughout New England have farm stands, farm stores, ice cream stands, and other businesses where you can enjoy dairy foods produced from their cows’ milk. Check out our list of New England Dairy Farms and Destinations to Visit this Summer to find a farm store to visit near you.
Purchase Dairy in Grocery Stores
If you can’t make it out to a farm-owned business, purchasing dairy foods at the grocery store is another great way to support farmers in our region. Milk is truly a local food, so much of the milk found in your local grocery store came from a local New England farm within 48 hours or less. Learn more about how milk travels from farm to grocery store here.
Make Your Favorite Dairy-Filled Recipe (or try one of ours)
Not only do dairy foods provide 13 essential nutrients, they make up some of our favorite foods. Celebrate National Dairy Month by making your favorite dairy-based recipe, or try one of our favorites:
Try Laurelbrook Farm’s Homemade Mac and Cheese Recipe.
Enjoy a Cranberry Apple Compote Yogurt Parfait.
Start your day off strong with a Strawberry Protein Smoothie.
Learn how to make your own ice cream at home.
Learn More about Dairy Farming
Throughout National Dairy Month, learn more about dairy farms and dairy farming right from the farmers themselves. We have a catalog of recorded farm tours available to watch at any time. These real-time video tour recordings will teach you how dairy farmers care for their cows, the environment, and their communities by producing a safe and nutritious product.
Learn even more about dairy farmers in New England on our blog. Plus, visit the Mobile Dairy Bar (and brand new Mobile Dairy Experience) at one of our events this summer. We’d love to see you there.
Happy National Dairy Month!
